Coupling

Counsellor diary | 26-Feb-2024

Neha and Kunal requested a couple’s counselling session due to their perceived feelings of incompatibility and the challenges that arose because of it. Each of them expressed that at different times, they felt resentment and frustration towards the other.

We began with a brief check-in to assess their individual emotional state at that time. They were both nervous but willing to give the process a fair chance.
We briefly touched upon the importance of open communication and the idea of listening to each other with empathy, without judgement.

Neha expressed her feelings of frustration and disappointment regarding differences in values, communication styles and interests. She shared instances where she felt unheard and unappreciated. It was apparent that she was seeking validation and acknowledgment for her contributions to the relationship.

Kunal conveyed his own frustrations, emphasising a sense of loneliness and a lack of emotional connection. He expressed feeling overwhelmed by Neha’s expectations and a struggle to find common ground. Kunal mentioned a desire for more independence and personal space.

The discussion further revealed significant challenges. Both interrupted each other’s sentences, making it difficult to fully understand what the other was saying. There was a clear lack of active listening and empathy.

We touched upon how active listening could help make the other person feel heard, thereby making them feel understood.

The couple was assigned the task of putting down in writing their thoughts on what they wanted in their relationship. This exercise was to help identify common points and values for the next session.

We ended on a positive note with both of them expressing a desire to continue with the process.
