The road not taken

Counsellor diary | 01-Jan-1970

AK reached out because she had suffered from severe palpitations and fainted. It had been so bad that she had landed herself in hospital for a few nights. She was convinced she had suffered from a heart attack but all tests came back clear.

She described in detail her experience of fainting and how her husband took her to the emergency room.

With some gentle nudging we got to talking about her life at home. AK had married Rajesh when she was quite young. They now had two children.

They had been in love and Rajesh did not want to wait for AK to finish studying. They married and she soon settled into her role as the eldest daughter-in-law, taking care of her in-laws and the house.
Rajesh had two brothers who got married after a few years to girls who were well educated and continued to work after marriage. They contributed to the household and their careers and life seemed to consistently evolve.

AK felt her life on the other hand was exactly as it had been 11 years ago, except now she had the responsibility of her two children as well. She felt stuck and was consumed with thoughts of how her life would have been if she had done things differently.

All of these suppressed emotions found a surface and she was on her way to taking responsibility for her life and finding her sense of purpose.
